Darth Bane, greatest of Sith Masters and inventor of the Rule of Two, is now approaching the time when his apprentice, Darth Zannah, must challenge and kill him and take an apprentice herself. Meanwhile, from the mined-out, troubled planet Doan, Princess Serra, widow of the crown princess, and her bodyguard, Lucia, travel to Coruscant to confer with the Jedi over their involvement on her home planet. The Jedi seem to her rather complacent about the extinction of the Sith; she remembers the sinister, black-armored giant who killed her father. Both Bane and a renegade Jedi also seek an ancient Sith relic, the Holochron, which may have been unearthed by the mining on Doan.
